Chapter One
There are two great days in a person's life— the day we are born and the day we discover why. ~William Barclay
Purpose is more than that thing we chase. It is what we were born to do. It is what God has ordained us to do. It is what drives us, propels us and sustains us. It is what makes us want to get out of bed, even when chaos awaits us. Purpose is what gives us hope to keep moving forward. Purpose is also what alludes many. From all walks of life, the age old question is, “Why am I here?” or “What was I born to do?” Many have sought the answer chasing job after job or relationship after relationship. One thing that remains true, purpose is larger than your fear that may try to prohibit you. It is greater than your lack of finances. It is bigger than anything that will try to trap you and hold you hostage outside of your God-given reason for your existence.
Chapter Two
Conception means to be received into the womb. Purpose must first be conceived. This requires intimacy with the Father. It necessitates getting to know the voice of God so that you can discern between the real and the false. Intimacy with God is essential so that you are able to know which road to take. This intimacy is achieved through prayer and study of God’s word which will better acquaint us with the voice of God (his will). Often the voice we respond to is not the voice of God. It may be the voice of ambition. Perhaps it is the voice of pride. Regardless, these voices are selfish and will lead to a miscarriage of purpose and perhaps a birthing of an Ishmael—wild and untamable (Genesis 16:12).
Chapter Three
It is one thing to have conceived and another one to know that you have conceived. There is that small number who instinctively knows the moment they have conceived. However, for many they are unaware that conception has occurred until a drastic change transpires. It may be a missed cycle, extreme fatigue, morning or night sickness, and so forth, but a noticeable shift has taken place. The same is with conception of purpose. Many times it is not until a change happens that our eyes are opened to purpose. The change may be a pink slip, an accident, or failure of a project, or so forth. Whatever the change is, it is noticeable and it draws us to our knees in search of answers. The danger is we can misread the change and take it as a negative when it is a positive. We may play the blame game and take our frustrations out on others instead of seeking the voice of God for directions.
Chapter FourWhat Can Cause an Abortion
I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both you and your seed may live. ~Deuteronomy 30:19
The seed of purpose that has been deposited in us has been entrusted into our care. We are to nurture and protect it. It is ultimately your responsibility to guard your purpose, choosing to have it live and not die. No matter what others may do or say or what your circumstances currently are, you still have to shield your purpose. To do this, you need to avoid poisonous relationships, negative thoughts, laziness, consistent unproductive use of your time, among other things.
Chapter Five
A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a child has been born into the world. ~ John 16:21
There are two types of labor—true labor or false labor, known as Braxton Hicks contractions. It is said that false labor is your body’s way of preparing for the real thing. This is also true in the birthing of your purpose. You will have occasions when you are confident that you are about to give birth to your purpose, but they are false labor pains. False labor pains can disheartened us if we do not understand what is taking place. We can look and feel as if we are ready to give birth. Therefore, when we discover that the contractions are false we may feel deflated, especially if we feel we have been carrying for a long time. We must not allow false labor pains to cause us to try to force the seed out, as it may do irreparable damage to our purpose.
Chapter Six
And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth. ~ 2 Kings 19:3
The day has finally arrived. You can feel it. You know it is time. There is immense peace in your spirit and your heart is leaping for joy. Although there is an element of fear, it is only because of the great expectation of what is about to take place. What you have done leading up to this day has prepared you to give birth to your purpose. You have entered the final stage of giving birth to your purpose. The important thing you must realize is that the delivery experience is different for everyone. There may be similarities, but your experience will vary from others. This is necessary for you to know so that you do not become consumed with comparing your experience to someone else’s. Listen, learn but do not embrace it as your own. When we compare ourselves to others they may appear to have had an easier delivery, causing us to become nervous and faint in heart. This is why you are not to compare your length of labor or the method of delivery required. Your purpose will come forth in its own way.
