Your church will be touched as it witnesses what many families experience on a daily basis, not just during Christmas. SCENE I
Setting:
Jackson family home. It is a nice home, well decorated, not too elaborate.
Christine and Cheryl are sitting on the sofa talking. Cheryl is casually dressed
but Christine still has on her work clothes. She is an Executive
Assistant.
Mother
(Christine)
is in her mid thirties, attractive, Christian woman doing all she can to hold
her family together.
Derrick
is the oldest child. He is between the ages of 16-17. He has a very strong
personality and he loves the Lord. He is expecting a miracle concerning his
father.
Randy
is between the ages of 10-12 and he loves fixing things.
Chris
is the youngest and between ages 8-9.
Ebony
– is between ages 14-15. She is attractive but has an obvious attitude.
Cheryl:
Mother’s best friend. She’s in her late thirties.
Doug
(Father):
In his late thirties. Ambitious and frustrated about being unemployed. He is
struggling with a cocaine addiction.
Doug is unemployed and
has turned to cocaine to help ease his pain of feeling like a failure to his
family. Christine has realized that his mood swings are getting worse and
things are disappearing from around the house.
Christine (Mother):
(sitting
on the sofa. She still has her work clothes on) – Cheryl I really
appreciate everything you have done for us. (looks at her watch). I just
can’t understand what is keeping Doug.
Cheryl:
Anything, anytime. You know that. Besides I know Doug has really had a
difficult time since his company laid him off.
Christine:
He was with them since he graduated from college and he’s having such a
difficult time finding a job making anything close to what he was making.
Cheryl:
How long has it been since he was laid off? A little over a year?
Christine:
Two years.
Cheryl:
Really? Time flies.
Christine:
He’s been doing some odd jobs to make ends meet. (Trying to sound as if
everything is okay). You know he used to do a lot of electrical and handy
man type work and I think he’s looking at going back to school to get his
certification or something like that. He loves working with his hands. He said
no more office work for him.
Cheryl:
I didn’t know he was an electrician. He hasn’t been able to find anything in
that area?
Christine:
(glances at her watch; her frustration is showing) Odds and ends but he
said he has to go back to school if he’s going to go into the electrical field
because his degree is in business administration. He wants to have his own
business.
Excerpts from SCENE II
Setting: It is two years
later. The family is now living in a low-income apartment. They seldom see
their father. This scene opens in the kitchen. Children sitting at table
eating breakfast (at least two different types of cereal boxes are on the
table.) There should be a small area where a sofa or such can be placed to
represent the living room and a partially decorated Christmas tree. The family
is now poor so the furnishings should not be too elaborate. The children are out
of school for the Christmas break.
Christine
– (Enters the kitchen, her appearance should be noticeably different from the
first scene. Perhaps a new hair style. ) Good morning
Children:
(Derrick, Ebony, Chris & Randy are already in the kitchen) Good
morning, Christine.
Christine:
It’s cold in here (rubbing her hands as if trying to keep warm) I
have told that landlord a hundred times that he needs to get these heaters fixed
in this building.
Randy:
(stomping at a roach on the floor) And kill these roaches!
Derrick:
It’s alright Mom, God is
gonna get us out of here.
Ebony:
(Looks at Derrick and
frowns)
Chris:
Christmas is almost
here!
Ebony:
(sarcastically)
And?
Chris:
And maybe our Christmas gift will be a new home!
Ebony:
Boy, there ain’t no
Santa Claus!
Derrick:
But there is a God.
Ebony:
Oh, and He is just going to give us a house? What, is He going to drop one down
from heaven?
Christine:
That is enough young lady. (looking at her watch) I have to go to the
store to pick up a few things but you and I need to have a talk because your
attitude is getting out of hand.
Ebony:
(leans back in her
chair and folds her arms)
SCENE III
(excerpts only - this is not
the full scene)
Setting:
Church with a choir and congregation. It is early Christmas morning and the
stage is also set for a Christmas play. The characters for the play are dressed
appropriately. The stage where the Christmas play will take place is dark until
the pastor announces the skit.
Pastor:
Merry Christmas
Congregation:
Merry Christmas
Pastor:
Let’s turn to
Isaiah 9:6 (reads passage ).
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is
given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be
called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince
of Peace.” Praise the Lord. Now, our youth will do a skit.
(stage lights for the skit come on)
DRAMA:
(Characters: Mary, Joseph, Gabriel, Angels, Narrator; Shepherds. Mary is on the
stage by herself)
Narrator:
(narrator is visible on stage) Over two thousand years ago, in a far
away country named Bethlehem, a King was born. Now the birth of this King was
on this wise: In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a
city of Galilee, named Nazareth to a virgin named Mary. And the angel came in
unto Mary and said:
(The
angel Gabriel appears to Mary- please note that Gabriel is a male)
Angel:
“Hail,
thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among
women.
Narrator:
And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her and what
manner of salutation this should be and the angel said:
Angel:
Fear not, Mary: for you have found favor with God and behold, you shall conceive
in your womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name Jesus. And he shall
be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall
give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house
of Jacob forever.
Mary:
How shall this be, seeing I
know not a man?
Angel:
The Holy Ghost shall come upon you and the power of the Highest shall overshadow
you therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of you shall be called
the Son of God. And behold, your cousin Elizabeth she has also conceived a son
in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For
with God, nothing shall be impossible.
